2. Coral Farm | What is Okinawa's "Coral Farm"?

An ocean restoration project that was the first in the world to successfully spawn artificially cultivated coral.

Sea Seed Ltd., located in Yomitan Village, Okinawa Prefecture, is a facility established by Koji Kinjo , a leading expert in coral farming. It was also the model for the film "Tida Kankan: The Sea, Coral, and a Small Miracle."

To date, more than 150,000 corals have been transplanted into the waters of Okinawa, and joint research is also underway with OIST (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University).

In addition, the Coral Field has created a sustainable, low-energy ecosystem to protect the lives of coral and marine life. Seawater is pumped up from underground and circulated, and the operation is environmentally friendly, using only the minimum amount of electricity necessary.

3. Importance | What corals give us

Coral is the "heart of the ocean" and supports the lives of people and the Earth.

Corals not only absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, but also purify the ocean, provide habitat for fish, and act as natural breakwaters. Healthy coral reefs are said to be a food source for about 15 tons per square kilometer per year .

Currently, there are approximately 800 species of coral on Earth, with over 300 species confirmed in Okinawa alone . Coral has a history dating back approximately 500 million years , and has supported the Earth's diverse ecosystems.

However, due to the effects of recent climate change and marine pollution, it is predicted that approximately 70 to 90 percent of the world's coral reefs will disappear within the next 20 years . Furthermore, if ocean temperatures rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius by 2100, it is said that ocean areas suitable for coral growth will almost completely disappear from the Earth.

Protecting coral means protecting our future.

However, big changes start with the accumulation of small actions by each individual.

Actions that individuals can take

  • Learn about corals and marine ecosystems
  • Use reef-friendly organic sunscreen
  • When swimming in the ocean, do not touch, kick, or stand on the coral
  • Always take your trash home with you and pick up any litter you find on the ground
  • Refrain from purchasing and using plastic products as much as possible
  • Choose detergents made with plant-based and natural ingredients
  • As a consumer, make conscious choices about your environmental impact
